Analysis of Start-Up Failures in Gas Generator Sets

Release Time:2025-12-21 Browse:67
For the operation of a power station, power generation equipment and generators are key components, and their operating status will largely affect the power supply capacity of the power station. Insufficient power supply capacity will not only make industrial production unsustainable, but also seriously affect people's production and daily lives, while damaging the economic interests of the power station itself. Therefore, from this perspective, power stations need to carry out good maintenance work on generator sets to ensure their stable operation. However, many power stations do not conduct regular maintenance and monitoring of generator sets, making the occurrence of generator set failures inevitable. This paper focuses on analyzing the causes of start-up failures of gas-fired generator sets, as follows:
  1. Inspection of Power Supply and Other Electrical Components
    Possible failure causes are as follows:
  • Insufficient battery power, resulting in weak engine operation or low speed;
  • Slippage of the starting magnetic switch and poor contact of carbon brushes;
  • Check whether each wiring terminal is loose or corroded;
  • Excessively long wires or too small wire diameter, causing excessive resistance and high voltage drop;
  • Incorrect wiring method of the starter;
  • Check whether the fuel valve or throttle valve is working normally;
  • Inspect the ignition system to confirm whether the spark plug can ignite normally.
  1. Inspection of Gas Supply System
    Possible failure causes are as follows:
  • Insufficient gas supply or pipeline failure, leading to a shortage of gas supply;
  • Check whether the gas pressure is too low, the gas supply is insufficient, and whether the air in the pipeline has been completely exhausted;
  • Check whether the gas pressure is too high, resulting in excessive air intake;
  • Check whether the gas calorific value meets the start-up requirements; if the calorific value is too low, the unit may experience difficulty starting or even fail to start;
  • Whether the ignition timing is accurate;
  • The shutdown handle is not reset.
  1. Troubleshooting of Insufficient Air Intake
    Main failure manifestations are as follows:
  • Air intake duct blockage, which is mostly caused by excessive dust accumulation or moisture in the air filter;
  • Excessively large or small intake and exhaust valve clearances, which will cause abnormal noise during engine operation;
  • Exhaust duct blockage, which may lead to insufficient intake compression pressure.
